It's not quilts,

but it's a huge sense of accomplishment. I'm so lucky to have parents that plant a garden big enough for the entire block. Here I have canned tomatoes, and green beans. There are jalapeno (sp) peppers on the other end you can't see. They always have plenty to share with us and my brother (but he thinks he's too good for garden food, he'd rather buy it, I'd say he's above his raising) anywho....I absolutely love canning. I'm almost certain I got this love from my mother. She would work during the school years and always take summers off. I never knew how she was lucky enough to do that, but she always did. So, in that, we spent our summers canning and freezing fresh veggies. I have to be honest and admit, I hating doing it then (as I was a teenager). However, I'm so glad this is one of many great skills my mother taught me.

  1. I, too, enjoy canning. It is such a satisfying feeling when all the jars "pop" and you can sit back and admire your HARD work.

  2. Canning is so much fun. My mom taught me too. I remember doing it one summer that was the hottest summer on record and we didn't have a.c.

  3. Your shelves look so good. I love canning too. My great grandmother and both grandmothers canned so I'm sure I got it from them. Funny my mom never canned. From here until early Sept. my kitchen is always a mess, however the shelves are filled up and waiting to be consumed during our long winter months.

    Great job!!

  4. Tonya way to go. we need more people like you. We depend way to much on store bought food. Make sure you pass that skill to your kidos.

  5. Awesome! I'd love if you'd teach me canning techniques. My mom did it a lot when we were kids but she stopped and I do jams but no tomatoes etc.

  9. It great when you can get home produce we don't really have a garden as such but grow what we can in pots, here in the UK we tend to freeze rather than can extra stuff but what ever way you can keep them is good & yes you must feel a sense of accomplishment well done

  10. I tried posting a comment from my phone, but I guess it didn't work.

I love that "pop" when a jar seals. not that I am a real canner. I have made jelly though and it does that lovely pop so you know it sealed. Ahhhh.. your shelf looks so good!

  11. Wow you've been productive! I like to can too. There's something about eating food you've grown and put away! Your shelf looks great!

  13. Hi Tonya.
I'm thinking about starting a little internet quilt group. Would you be interested? I have several who would like to and want to have twelve altogether. I thought each person could have a month, and say what they like. If you are particular, you could mail each person fabric. (you know I wouldn't be) Anyway, in your month, you could provide a pattern or give an idea as general or specific as you like. For example, I really want a Christmas quilt. I think I would say that I would like a Christmasy block made from blue, white and silver. I would say it could be any size or pattern. Then I would make one, put it on the site (we would have our own blog site that all twelve of us can contribute to) and the other eleven would make what they want to add and send it to me. Then I would have 12 blocks and would make up a quilt and then post those pictures back to the site too. If we each have a month, we each get a quilt. Sounds like fun to me. Tell me what you think.
    Bless you!

  15. You brought back some memories for me today! I also spent the summers of my youth canning with my Mom. Don't really have time for it now although I wish I did. I'm jealous of all of your canned goodies. :o)
