Felt and Fabric for Backs of quilts.

So, I've been wanting to do something with felt. This, I'm sure isn't high quality felt. I'm not even sure if there is a difference. I got these small pieces to try to work with it. See if I like it. I have two of each of these colors. Now, what to do with them? ;)
I mentioned awhile back that I never have fabric for backing. I had so many people tell me they use sheets, or they know of someone that uses sheets. Well, I thought I'd give it a whirl. I found Twin flat sheets at wal-mart for $2.50................yeah, $2.50. Can you believe that. I wanted one of every color. However, I settled for two. I have plans for these. One is black soot, and one is light blue. YIPPIE.........I have backs. "baby got back".....haha
UPDATE: I think I must have confused everyone. The sheets are for backing on quilts. The felt is not for quilting at all.........just something I wanted and wanted to try some felt projects.

  1. What an intriguing combination. Can't wait to see what you make. I have used sheets for backings of quilts before. In fact, when I lived in North Carolina, I lived close to a Canon Mills Outlet Store. I would go there and buy the remnants of sheeting to make the tops of my quilts, and seconds of flat sheets for the backs. That way, I had coordinating tops and backs for my quilts. Don't forget to let us know what you end up making.

  2. I'm interested to see how this works for you. Being a hand quilter, I've never used sheets for backing because it is too difficult to quilt. My thoughts on the felt is that you would have to be very careful not to overquilt it because felt stretches rather easily. Let me know how your experiments work.

  4. I can't imagine how you would use felt to quilt. I will be watching to see what you do. Are you the one that used vintage sheets? I have some old sheets in the linen closet I am not sure you would call them vintage maybe just old.

  5. I have used a sheet once, but my sister uses them all the time. I read once that you aren't supposed to use sheets because of thread count and something about the holes the needle makes will cause them to fray or something...
But everybody is using them and I haven't had any problems with mine so far! I will probably use them more in the future!!

  7. Oh my, the QP will be out in force, you wait and see.
I have been using sheets for the backs of some of my quilts for as long as I can remember, no joins!!!
    BLISS!!!
Go for it, don't let anyone talk you out of it, I have hand sewn in my day too, but now its all machined which makes life simpler, for me anyway. You get such pretty colours too nowadays.
The cotton is much better too than years ago. Janet

  8. I've used sheets to quilt for years. And I've found that they last forever on quilts. I've not had any wear out before the top does. You can't go wrong in my opinion.

  9. I like to use the felt for pin cushions. It is also great for backing if you make patches.

Gotta love those sheets. You can't buy the fabric for what Walmart sells the sheets for and there is no seam! I also use them to make dust skirts for the bed. Just lay them on the box spring and put the mattress on top!

  11. I have used reg felt on penny rugs and ornies etc. I prefer wool felt but was given some yardage so used it! Works for me! Handles the DMC floss with buttonhole stitch good.

I used sheets many years ago on the kids quilts. Use to go through Danville on way to pick up steps in Stuart for visits so would
go by the Dan River outlet store for bags of seconds!
Held up great and worked fine...they were not all cotton either.
I also used them to make ruffled curtains. Sheets are a great fabric choice sometimes for different projects.
I made wrap skirts from some vintage ones I bought at the thrift too.
To each her own...do your own thing...I do not live by others rules... ha!!
    Have fun!!
